New Novel publishing dates!
by admin on Nov.16, 2009, under Johnny Depp, Mira Nair, Shantaram Movie, The Mountain Shadow
I have to apologise to readers that there is some bad news to get out of the way before we find out when the Shantaram sequel The Mountain Shadow will be published.
Shantaram movie ’shelved’.
UK newspaper The Independent published an article on Friday wherein Mira Nair reportedly told actor Amitabh Bachchan that she was told the project was ’shelved’, and with no other speculation as to why this was the case.
For fans of the movie, this comes as little surprise as we reported back in May that rumours has surfaced that Johnny Depp had stalled the production of Shantaram stating concerns over security. It appears that Mira’s attempts to steer the project back to filming in India were not as successful as she had hoped.
The Mountain Shadow
Note: the following dates are known to be delayed
Fans will just have to wait for the new book, The Mountain Shadow, showing as being published on amazon.com on February 4th 2012, in an ‘Export ed edition’ by Little & Brown publishers. On the UK and European amazon sites the date is set as 2nd September the same year (and the same publisher). Full details copied below:

I think fans will be pleased at least with this news, in the knowledge that a new novel from Gregory David Roberts will take his storytelling in a new direction with at least a a few of the characters we knew so well from Shantaram.

Very disappointing news about the Shantaram movie (appreciated thanks for the uploader for reporting, nonetheless)– I think Johny Depp has LOST atleast ONE fan here today– that’s ME– because of his “spoilt foriegner” attitude towards filming Shantaram in Mumbai, INDIA, as is absolutely required, honest and fitting to the very essence and soul of GDR’s novel.
Mira Nair, I can absolutely understand you, support you and salute you for your remaining adamant to making the film in INDIA, when and (now) if it will ever be made– in accordance with he wishes of (and I’m allowing myself to talk in the name of) MOST Shantaram fans who KNOW, within, that the film can do justice to the novel and respect it ONLY when filmed in India.
Amitabh Bachchan is NOT growing younger by the day… I do so very hope to see him as ABDEL KADER KHAN. I’m so certain it will garner him the Oscar!!
I think it’s a very SHAMEFUL thing that if Depp is NOT interested (no matter his reasons for it) to make SHANTARAM– he is selfish enough not to pass on the task to some other actor, who is more willing to make the movie– and is still holding on to the adaptation rights of the novel.
I bet GDR is now sorry for having Depp own the rights to this, his magnificent novel.
Ok, now that I said all I wanted to get off my system about “foreigner-security-concerned-Depp”, I’m happy about “The Mountain Shadow” novel releasing (hopefully) soon. I hope I can get it as soon as it comes out.
I have a suggestion/question:
Will this site, please, help sell the books to fans, like me, when it comes out? I don’t have pay-pal or an International credit card– so if they’ll be willing to take money orders for the novel– it would be great!
Also, I have a request to Gregory David Roberts:
I am hopeful and sure that “The Mountain Shadow” will be a beautiful novel— I don’t know if it’ll be better than SHANTARAM or not– However, Mr. David Roberts, whatever you do with the film-rights of this/your next novel–
PLEASE DON’T LET JOHNY DEPP BUY THE RIGHTS TO IT!!!
With honors and respect,
Sasson

Part of me is disappointed that the movie will not be out. However another part of me feels happy because a movie cannot and will not do justice to this book. It is to be read and relished. Maybe an audio version may help for those who cannot read.

New book coming out soon. ! hope it hits the book shelfs in india the same time as the international release. Otherwise the streets will be flooded with the pirated versions of the book.

Better to be shelved than to be made in another country.
That is good news about a new book coming out at least.

Shantaram was such a special book that since reading it I have been unable to pick up any other book (I now have a stack of new books that I’ve not touched).
I have read Shantaram 3 times in a year and I simply cannot imagine how a film can do justice to GDR’s masterpiece of litarature (I’d still watch it if it came out though).
Can’t wait to get me a copy of The Mountain Shadow.
Thank you Gregory David Roberts.
