Situated on the southernmost tip of the island, this area is where Lin first gets off the fateful bus ride from the Airport, only to meet Prabaker his indian guide in those very first moments. Prabaker takes Lin and his Canadian companions to the India guest house, where they are greeted by a less than welcoming Anand, the hotel manager, and a stark bare room in which they all enjoy a brief moment to relax.
Also in Colaba is the Slum where Prabaker, and Lin eventually, lives. Situated on the west side of the tip of Mumbai Island, with the southern facing Chowpatti beach curving around to the west.
Leopold’s cafe & bar
The scene of many encounters with characters, and a pivotal point of the city in Shantaram where many traders come to find the right person or people to do business with. A Key character in this bar is Didier, who later comes to Lin’s aid at a crucial point in the book.
