No one's mentioned it, so I will: GDR has a fairly extensive post on the recent hullaballoo in Mumbai on his Shantaram.com site.

Interesting.. I had a quick glance through, but I have to come back to this later.

Thanks for posting about this Joe, I check the shantaram.com site from time to time, but it didn't occur to me to check it recently.

i got the feeling that Greg gave a very pro islamic flavour to his statements.

terrorism is unforgivable and reprehensible.

That's strange, I didn't get that feeling at all. What I got was a separation of the religion from the actions of some other groups. I think you got that impression perhaps from what GDR says about what we can do in response to such attacks? I thought the points GDR made were rational ones, and perhaps not popular perhaps.. but I would tend to agree with him that to solve the problem we can only tackle the issues at their rational root.

But, I agree with what you are saying Bluefox, in that terrorism is unforgivable and reprehensible.

I did feel that the attempt to tackle a broad range of issues in his update was misguided a little, although if as he says people have been asking him these questions he's right to address them.

He ends on a very positive note I thought:
Quote
Keep the faith. Let the flames die down, let the smoke clear, and then don’t abandon your plan to visit India for a holiday. Go there. See the people, and spend time with them. Buy Indian products, buy and listen to Indian music CDs, buy and watch Indian movies, and ask your company that does business with India to stay the course and keep the faith with the country. Donate to recognized charities that do good work in India. In your own country, go down to a local store or restaurant that is run by Indians in your city, and tell them that you care, and you feel sorry for what has happened in Bombay. Resist the attempts of politicians to reduce your rights and freedoms in the name of the “war on terror”. Be loving to one another, wherever you are. Talk about peace and freedom and music and art and literature. And remind yourself, and those you cherish, that in every city in the world there are millions of beautiful, positive, creative actions done every hour, for each act of violence done every month.

I thought he was reaching a bit too far as well. But as you say, Andy, if he has been asked about these things, he might as well answer them. I hope all the attention doesn't go to his head. Probably the last thing an artist needs is to have people regarding him/her as some sort of messiah.

His views didn't strike me as pro-Islamic at all. Treat them as criminals, not as Muslims, was his message, and I think it makes sense.

And I believe the word is 'reprehensible', not irreprehensible, although of course I could be wrong.

I guess people had turned to GDR as a source to try and explain why these terrorist attacks may have occurred, and yeah, probably as such he felt like he might as well give his 2 cents worth regarding this. It is interesting though that he seems to think he has all the answers. He is definitely more knowledgable than me on the topic, and I did learn some things from what he wrote, however in my opinion it is perhaps dangerous to give 5 or 6 dot points that he suggests may solve the problem, because things are never that simple. I understand what he is trying to say and where he is coming from and I think his heart is in the right place, but I did get a sense of superiority in his tone, as though he believes he knows more than the average person and even more than politicians about what is going on. Maybe he does? However, I wonder whether it has all gotten to his head a bit. He used to make a deliberate show of humility in his interviews and opinions 3-4 years ago, but he doesn't seem to bother with that so much anymore. This superior, lecturing-type tone also pops up in Shantaram at times. He has described himself in interviews as an "extraordinary" person, and yes what he has been through in his life and has had the opportunity to learn from this is certainly not what the average person sees and experiences. However, this doesn't mean that he will necessarily know all the answers to life's poignant questions and sometimes he seems to present himself as though he does. As I said, I do think GDR's heart is in the right place and I agree with most of what he wrote, my thoughts are that he just needs to be a bit careful in how he presents his opinion.
